It’s a very interesting question, does crying burn calories? You have always been told that practically any work of effort will burn a certain amount of calories, but does the act of crying fall into that category as well?
Some people believe that the number is based on the severity of the situation. In other words, are you softly crying without much body movement or have you been hysterical while rocking back and forth? Because of the extra movement, a common wives tale is that you will burn more calories with a harder cry than you would with a soft one.
So coming back to the real question, does crying burn calories? The answer is surprisingly yes, regardless of the way that you might cry. However, it doesn’t mean that you will be burning enough to kick start your metabolism rate. The fact is that it doesn’t take a lot from the body to actually cry. There is little to no movement and nothing extreme enough to really affect your metabolic rate.
This means that even though you may be hysterical, it will work out other areas of the body than your digestive tract. And because for the fact that everyone’s body burns calories differently and the variation can be huge, the amount of calories burned is solely dependent upon your personal type, metabolism rate and the intensity of the cry itself.
However, there is an actual range you can base it on. Crying is known to burn the same amount of calories that laughing does, or about 1.3 calories per minute. And there is something true to the excessive cry compared to the soft version.
For instance, if you are hysterically crying which involves the shakes, constant movement, and rocking; you are, in fact, burning more calories while working out your stomach muscles. This is often why the body will ache the following day. But, the amount is still minimal.
The maximum number that can be burned is 3.7 calories per minute during crying, which isn’t a whole lot. But, it is something. So, does crying burn calories? The answer is yes, but a very small amount.
