Causes Of Teeth Sensitivity

So, what causes sensitive teeth all of a sudden when everything was fine? As tooth decay is caused by erosion from the acids created by the bacteria, the process is slow and gradual. But once the erosion becomes deep enough and sufficient damage is done to the tooth, sensitivity occurs when the dentin layer (the underlying section of your teeth) becomes exposed to the environment. This inner section of your teeth houses the nerves system and when these nerves are exposed to the foods that you eat particularly cold desserts such as ice cream, you will feel the shocking pain. In a healthy tooth, this inner nervous section is protected and covered by a hard outer layer known as the enamel. The Enamel is eight times stronger than the dentin section of the tooth. Problems occur when this enamel is damaged due to issues such as cracks, decay or even receding gums. The primary cause of tooth decay is taking too much sugary foods. Sugars left on your teeth creates a perfect environment for bacteria to thrive thereby eroding off your tooth’s enamel gradually.

Besides that, grinding of your teeth particularly during your sleep could also be a cause of damaging to the protective enamel layer of your teeth. So if you are suffering from one of those causes, here are some of the things that you can do.

If you have experienced teeth sensitive to hot and cold, you can ease the sensitivity though regular use of toothpaste specially for sensitive teeth. Although it may cost a bit more than ordinary toothpaste, it does help reduce your tooth sensitivity symptoms significantly. It is also recommended that you use a soft or medium-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth. Using a toothbrush that is too hard can actually cause your enamel to gradually wear off and gums to recede. If your teeth sensitivity causes is due to teeth grinding, then buy a mouth guard and use it at night. It will stop the problem.
