The slimming corset has been a fashion must-have for over a millennium. In Europe, this garment gained mainstream prominence in women’s fashion during medieval times, particularly the dark ages. Ancient Roman togas seemed to plummet in popularity as quickly as the Visigoth and Germanic barbarians took over the Holy Roman Empire.
This turning point in fashion was a result of the rise of feudalism and the emerging dominance of Christianity. The corset has always been used to help women achieve an hour glass figure. If you browse through images of gothic paintings such as the famous Italian frescoes by Giotto you will see the earliest form of this corset.
However, one of the most documented consequences of wearing such a clothing article was the discomfort caused by the complex combination of strings that were fastened around the body.
