Underactive Bladder

by Edward Daniel 11 Comments

Underactive bladder is a condition often catergorized as difficulties in passing urine. The difficulty to void caused the urinary bladder to remain full for most of the time and this condition is normally a result of damage to the nerves that control the bladder.

As the nerve is damaged, brain signal that gives command to start the bladder contraction would be lost and therefore no contraction of the bladder occur to expel the urine. This in turn would lead to the loss of sensation of bladder fullness. One would not feel the urge to urinate even though his or her bladder is very full.

Sometimes when the bladder becomes over full, little urine leakage may occur prompting underactive bladder treatment a necessity.

Underactive Bladder Treatment

As an underactive bladder causes the bladder to remain constantly full for most of the time, this increases the risks of various health conditions especially bladder infection. Read also about atonic bladder, a similar condition that is normally caused by bladder obstruction and nerve damage.

Since urine is unable to drain out and remains in the bladder for long periods of time, it becomes a good breeding ground for bacteria. When more and more bacteria live in the stagnanted pool of urine in the urinary bladder, urinary tract infection would then occur. Therefore it is essential to prevent urinary retention and to completely drain out the urine periodically.

Normally this can be achieve by using a catheter. A catheter is a tool that is used as a way to manually drain out the urine. It is basically a tiny flexible tube that is inserted into the bladder through the urethra opening. Besides this, there are also a couple of other treatment options available such as by taking medically prescribed drugs or a surgical operation to insert a stent into the bladder neck to help bladder control.

Nonetheless, you should always talk to your doctor about the best treatment option for your current condition. Your doctor would be able to make an assessment based on your current underactive bladder condition, your health, age among others.

I currently take ” Flomax ” 0.4 mg two at bedtime, but that isn’t enough. I wanted to at least let some of you know the condition that I suffer from so you may check into it for yourselves. If any of you suffer from Diabetic Neuropathy, check with your Endroconalgist. I have Neuropathy IN MY BLADDER ! You may have the same issue. I know this doesn’t do anything to help, but it at least may explain WHY this is happening to you. God Bless you all.

I have stopped doing things I love, i.e. horseback riding for long periods of time, due to my UAB. I am very unhappy about not being able to do the things I used to be able to do. If anyone has any suggestions, I am completely open to anything. I was set up to have urodynamics but backed out when I found out I would be expected to void on command….good luck with that. I have enough trouble at home without going to a strange place. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am a 64-year-old female.

There’s a procedure called InterStim Therapy to help stimulate the bladder with electrical impulses. Check out the Medtronic website. I’m having the trial period as soon as I can have it scheduled.
